Customized Shirts for Business: How to Get Branded Apparel Right
Customized shirts are one of the most powerful branded items a business can invest in β worn in public, seen by strangers, and kept for years. Here's how to choose styles, decoration methods, and quantities that deliver.
Why Customized Shirts Are Worth the Investment
A quality customized shirt worn in public generates roughly 3,400 brand impressions over its lifetime β more than almost any other promotional product category. Unlike desk items that only reach the recipient, branded apparel is mobile advertising. Every time an employee wears your shirt to the grocery store, a client wears your polo to the office, or a team member shows up to an event in your gear, your brand reaches an audience you didn't directly target.
The catch: branded apparel only works when the shirt itself is worth wearing. A thin, uncomfortable shirt gets used for yard work or painting walls. A quality garment gets worn everywhere.
Shirt Styles and When to Use Them
Classic T-Shirts
The most versatile option. Unisex crewnecks work for trade show giveaways, event uniforms, employee welcome kits, and customer loyalty gifts. Upgrade from 100% cotton to a cotton-polyester blend for softer feel and better shape retention. Ring-spun cotton shirts feel noticeably more premium than open-end cotton and are worth the small per-unit increase.
Polo Shirts
Polos occupy the business-casual sweet spot β more professional than a T-shirt, more approachable than a button-down. They're the standard choice for client-facing staff, trade show booth teams, golf events, and executive gifting. Pique cotton and moisture-wicking performance fabrics are the most popular options.
Performance / Athletic Shirts
Moisture-wicking performance shirts have replaced traditional T-shirts in many corporate and active contexts. They're popular for fitness-related events, outdoor company activities, and any environment where comfort during movement matters. Sublimation printing enables full-color all-over designs that aren't possible on standard cotton.
Long-Sleeve and Henley Styles
Long-sleeve versions of the above, suited for cooler climates, outdoor events, or workplaces where short sleeves aren't appropriate. Also effective as a premium upgrade in a customized shirt program β offering both short and long sleeve options increases the perceived value of the apparel investment.
Decoration Methods
Screen Printing
The industry standard for customized shirts. Cost-effective at volume (50+ units), produces vibrant colors, and is highly durable through repeated washing. Best for designs with 1β8 solid colors. Pricing drops significantly with quantity, making it the default for any order over 48 units.
Embroidery
Embroidered logos on polos and outerwear signal premium quality. The raised, textured look carries more perceived value than screen printing and is preferred for professional and executive contexts. Best for logos rather than complex artwork β fine details don't translate well to thread.
Direct-to-Garment (DTG)
DTG printing allows full-color photographic designs on cotton garments without screens or setup fees. Ideal for small quantities (under 24 units) and designs with gradients or complex artwork. Per-unit cost is higher than screen printing at volume, but the lack of setup cost makes it competitive for small runs.
Sizing and Ordering Tips
Order a size run, not a single size. For most organizations, a distribution of S (10%), M (25%), L (30%), XL (25%), XXL (10%) covers the majority of recipients. Adjust based on what you know about your specific audience.
Order 10β15% extra. New hires, replacements for damaged shirts, and gifts for unexpected contacts all require backup inventory. Running out of XL β the most common size β within weeks of an event is avoidable with a small overage buffer.
Request a physical sample for large orders. Before committing to 500 units, request a production sample to verify color accuracy and garment quality. The cost of a sample is trivial against the cost of a full rerun.
